The Author

Author Kerry CooneyKerry Cooney has gathered a wealth of experience second to none throughout her years of commitment to families and young people. It was when she began her work as a house parent for offending teenage wards of the state that she first discovered her passion for helping the young people no body else thought could be helped.

Through out the years she has continued her work within schools, working in both primary and secondary schools, encompassing children with behavioural issues, learning disabilities and intellectual disabilities. This experience has enabled her to produce workable strategies within the classroom for these challenging children and young people. It was during this time that Kerry began her research into ADHD, and how it impacted the child’s life in school as well as socially and emotionally.

Moving on from the school system, Kerry began working with families at risk of break down. This took on a broad range of situations from parental substance abuse, mental illness, intellectual disabilities, neglect, abuse and poverty. Kerry worked closely with parents in crisis, educating and supporting them, and setting practical and achievable goals to see the family unit thrive. During this period Kerry continued her research into ADHD and began running workshops for parents. These workshops were incredibly well received, with parents finding Kerry’s no nonsense, down to earth approach easy to relate to. This approach, her practical understanding, along with career and life experience, provided the environment for life changing and empowering workshops.

As word about these ADHD courses spread, so did the demand for Kerry's expertise. She began running workshops and seminars for primary schools, secondary schools, child and family day care centres, universities and welfare agencies as well as offering specialized one on one sessions for parents.

Kerry continued this work when she became a children’s worker for a domestic violence service, yet again putting in place practical and workable strategies for the care of children in harsh situations.

Beyond her employment experience Kerry has also raised three children, one of whom has ADHD and a specific learning disability, giving her a personal wealth of experience and understanding that speaks directly to parents living with a child who has ADHD.

The Book

Every Day With ADHDThis book was borne through years of working with parents and children. Over that time it became apparent that there were unmet needs in families where a child had been diagnosed with ADHD. A lack of knowledge and specific tools for ADHD was also causing concern for professionals who desperately wanted information on how best to assist these children and families.

The main aim of writing "Every Day with ADHD" was to produce a workable document. It had frustrated me for years that very few people truly understood ADHD and its impact on the child and the family. At times I was annoyed that the only apparent view of the child with ADHD was that of a naughty, far too demanding and uncontrollable child who was heading nowhere. I did not see these children in that way and refused to let others easily adopt that view.

It is the author's belief that the controversial aspects of the existence of ADHD and the use of medication kept the focus away from the child and the family’s real issues often preventing any hope of clarity and moving towards a positive outcome.

Along with the need for understanding was a disturbing lack of support for the child and family dealing with ADHD. There were no clear guidelines or behavioural techniques developed specifically for this special child. Parents, teachers and carers options were so limited that it spawned a defeatist attitude. The parenting courses and workshops were developed to offer positive options, alternatives and support surrounding these issues.

This exciting new book has been written for parents, carers and teachers of children with ADHD to help understand the world of their child along with providing workable strategies for every day living.

I am the mother of an ADHD young adult, so this book has been based on my professional and personal experiences incorporating strategies developed and tested over 10 years of facilitation of the 8 week ADHD Parenting Workshops delivered to hundreds of ADD/ADHD families & Professionals.

"Everyday with ADHD" was written as a helpful handbook to be informative, practical and full of realistic hope.
